Rural Infrastructure and Development |
Recognizing the importance of infrastructure creation in achieving the millennium
goals, NIRD has created a centre, namely, Centre for Rural infrastructure (CRI)
in April, 2008. The centre aims at providing policy support to the Ministries of
Rural Development, Health and Family Welfare, HRD and in addition, capacity building
of the development functionaries involved in planning and implementation of National
Rural Health Mission, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Indira Awaj Yojana, Swajaldhara,
Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programm, Total Sanitation Campaign etc. The mandate
and objectives of the centre are presented below.

To understand and appreciate the role of rural infrastructure in enhancement of
quality of life |

To enhance the skills of development functionaries on effective formulation and
management of rural infrastructure programmes and |
|

To suggest policy measures through evaluation/impact assessment studies |

Thrust Areas |

The broad activities of the centre encompasses the following major thrust areas. |
* Rural Roads
* Rural Drinking Water and sanitation
* Rural Health care
* Rural Housing
* Rural Market infrastructure
* Rural Tele-communication
* Rural Electrification
* Irrigation canals etc
|

The programmes and policies that are designed and implemented with respect to the
above are analysed and necessary policy support will be extended to the concerned
State / Central Ministries by CRI. In addition, the centre under takes the consultancy
projects on request by National and International organizations. Further, the participants
attending training programmes at NIRD will be exposed to the demonstration units
established at Rural Techology park, NIRD, Hyderabad. It is to be noted that the
centre related technologies in particular are cost effective, location specific
covering diverse geo-climatic situations with a host of feasible options in the
areas of housing (models), water treatment methods and public health care measures.
