OBJECTIVES: 1. To examine the structural characteristics of SHGs that are emerging in the rural credit market;2. To analyse the operating systems in SHGs for mobilization of savings,delivery of credit to the needy,management of group funds, recovery of loan overdues, and linking process with banks, etc.;3. To explore the effectiveness of SHGs in identifying, nurturing entrepreneurial talent among poor and providing escort services in micro enterprise development;4. To analyse the role played by Self-Help Promotional Agencies (SHPA) in building up leadership, establishing linkage with banks, access to product market, technical upgradation,management of group funds, skill development etc. for sustainable development of micro enterprises; and 5. To suggest appropriate policy interventions for effective performance of SHGs.
METHODOLOGY: Information was collected from 300 SHGs through case study and survey method.
