ABSTRACT: Objerctives: 1) To understand the casual factors that leaded to the
emergence and successful operation of industrial clusters,
and 2) To evolve set of policy
recommendations on the basis of the above.
Methodology: A number of industrial clusters exist around
Hyderabad. They include electronic component industry (100 to 150 units),
electric fan industry (200 to 250 units) drugs and pharmaceutical industry
(250 to 300 units), component tooling service (150 to 200 units),
forging foundry
industry(about 30 to 40 units), plastic component industry(about 50
units),slab polishing industry (about 300 units at Tandoor), and Leather
Shoe Sandle units (about
800-1000 units)around Hyderabad. We have had discussions with concerned
District Industry Centres and with the local Associations for the above
industries. After some initial set backs, we have identified three
industrial clusters based on the prevailing/potential inter-firm linkages
and networking on various aspects. We expect each industry to have its own
peculiarities, despite commonalities. This would provide us with broader
perspective. While a case study approach to each of the industry would be
taken, in a given industry the industrial units would be surveyed on a
sample basis. About 50 units are proposed to be studied in each industry.
In addition, the role of various related promotional agencies for each
industry would be studied along with the role played by the respective
industry associations. It may be mentioned here that the Industry
Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh has agreed to extend all
non-financial support to the study.

PROJECT ABSTRACT: The aim of this
project is to study the impact of coir industry on the ecosystem and the
people engaged in retting activity. The project also intends to lay
emphasis on recommending and implementing measures to enhance the
socio-economic and health status of the target group. Survey was conducted
and two yards in Kadalundi were selected for systematic studies. Wells
were also selected to study the extent of groundwater pollution. Samples
collected were subjected to physiochemical, biological and microbiological
analysis. Socio-economic and health survey was carried out and the people
engaged in coir-retting activity were demarcated. Awareness camps on the
topic "Water and Health" were conducted in four wards of Kadalundi
Panchayat. The importance of water quality, water borne diseases, low cost
water treatment measures and water conservation techniques were elaborated
in these awareness camps. Local level committees were formed to monitor
the continuous treatment of common wells selected for the study.
