Keeping in view the importance and imperatives of Panchayats in the entire development process in the country, the Centre for Panchayati Raj has been endeavouring in the process of strengthening and capacity building of PRIs as an institution of self-government and good governance.
FOCUS
The major thrust of the Centre for Panchayati Raj is to conduct research studies and organize training programmes on various facets of Decentralized local government and Good Governance in India, including other countries of the world. In doing so, the Centre endeavors to establish resource centre on rural local government to cater needs of various agencies. Besides, the Centre is assisting Government of India, State Governments, High level Committees / Commissions and International Agencies from time to time on issues relating to decentralized governance.
ACHIEVEMENTS
While assisting the Government of India in policy intervention, the Centre has provided academic support in the process of amending the Constitution to revitalise the Panchayat system. To enable the state governments to enact conformity Panchayat Act as a sequel to the 73rd Constitution Amendment, the Centre has prepared a 'Model Panchayati Raj Bill' which was adopted by several states. The Centre is engaged in conducting research studies on Critical Issues on Rural Development, including Panchayati Raj, Development Administration and Good Governance.
The Centre has several consultancy research and training programmes from national and international agencies such as National Commission on Population, UNDP, World Bank, FAO, Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany, Ford Foundation, etc.
The Centre also conduct Training programmes, Seminars, Workshops for Elected Representatives, particularly MPs, MLAs and Zilla Parishad Chairpersons and other government functionaries at the National, State and District level on policy perspectives, democratic decentralization and good governance.
