OBJECTIVES: 1. To know various factors like knowledge,perception, attitude, group dynamics etc., of farmers and officials affecting the level of farmers participation.2. To study the structure and functioning of farmers drainage societies in enlisting the participation of farmers in planning, operation and maintenance activities.
METHODOLOGY: Case study method was used to collect data. The data were collected through participatory rural appraisal method from members of Farmers Drainage Society and executives of the Society.

TITLE: Rural sanitation and health status-A comparative study of two villages of Jammu district.

PROJECT ABSTRACT : Objectives: (1)To calculate the incidence of various communicable diseases in both the villages for a period of one year in the family members particularly in the age group of 0-5; (2)To calculate the duration of sickness in the adult age group and thus the economic loss caused in terms of working days lost due to illness or attending to illness; and (3)To compare the mortality rates of both the villages.
Methodology : In order to capture the impact of improved sanitation on the overall, well being in general and improvement in health status, in particular, data were collected from the primary sources on the basis of a field survey conducted with the help of a pre-tested questionnaire.
Study Area: Nagbani, Falora and Ghari Villages in J & K
PLANNED OUTPUT: Article and Report.
PRESENT STATUS: The case study proved that there is a meaningful relationship between sanitation and the health status which are every human beings concern. It has also established that in sanitary and unhygienic practices result in illness which lead to loss of productivity and thus the economic loss in terms of working days for the country as a whole.

PROJECT ABSTRACT: Objectives: Objectives of the study were to: 1).assess the number of units in the private sector who were dealing in sanitary hardware either as sellers of manufactured goods or as producers of vitreous/ferro-cement/cement-fabricated material or as both, and to prepare their list; 2).assess their turnover, product mix and the approximate share of private individual purchases in the total turnover of sanitary hardware; 3).study the nature of investment made in the sector, the role of institutional finance in promoting the enterprise and the scope for additional investment; 4).assess the trend in growth of turnover over the last ten years and the critical factors that might had contributed to the increase in sales of sanitary hardware 5).assess the size and characteristics of the catchment of the typical unit/(s); 6). understand the profile of the typical individual buyer of sanitary hardware in the rural market; and 7). assess the willingness of the enterpreneurs to participate as partners in the RSP and the nature of support considered critical.
Methodology: Information both primary and secondary is collected from buyers and wholesale dealers and distributors of sanitary hardware in rural areas through sample survey method.

TITLE: Management of drinking water and sanitation in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal, current status and lessons for policy makers and implementors.

OBJECTIVES: 1. To appreciate the policies and programmes of drinking water and sanitation in the selected states in general and the sample districts in particular;2. To assess the performance of rural drinking water supply and sanitation programmes in terms of coverage of villages and population; and the problems in operation and maintenance of water structures and systems created under the scheme; and 3. To examine the problems and constraints in the implementation of drinking water and sanitation programmes.
METHODOLOGY: Information was collected through PRA tools like focus group discussionsand semi structured interview from a sample of 150 users of drinking water and sanitation from a few RWS project villages.

PROJECT ABSTRACT: Objectives: 1). To identify and locate the source of waste water stagnation in the service villages; 2).To design replicable sullage disposal system for the entire village; 3). to motivate women and youth in the villages (at least 10 from each village)in the Science and Technology (ST)intervention through method and result demonstration; 4). To construct the community and household soak pits in the villages through people's participation. 5). To organise environmental clubs in each village and help them learn more about the ways and means of improving their habitat and equip them as caretakers of the ST intervention.
Methodology: Intervention and Action Research Approach, Participatory Rural Appraisal and Extension.
Study Areas: Tamilnadu, Dindigul district, 37 Service Villages in Athoor, Dindigul and Reddiarchatram Blocks.
