OBJECTIVES :1. To understand and explore the relationship of gender inequality in households with poverty and the interface of that relationship with reproductive behaviour of rural households in general and rural women in particular; and 2. To delineate the overlap between poverty, gender inequality and reproductive choice as manifested through observed fertility behaviour.

PROJECT ABSTRACT:
Objectives:1. To find out why the various schemes introduced in two or more states have succeeded in one and failed in the case of the other state? 2. To identify the causal socio-cultural, administrative, managerial and financial factors/circumstances for the success or the failure of the scheme? And 3. To examine the scheme introduced/implemented in the States has some inherent weaknesses and requires any modification suitable to the socio-cultural peculiarities of the region? etc.
Methodology: Information is collected from 484respondents of Pune and Ratlam districts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh respectively through separate Interview schedules.

PRESENT STATUS : Completed:Project data recalls that girls literacy in Madhya Pradesh is lower than Maharashtra as Madhya Pradesh has 37.82% SC and The Statesman population where as Maharashtra has only 12% population of SC and The Statesman. In Madhya Pradesh, theurban population is 23.21% whereas in Maharashtra, it is 38.73%. Efforts are being made in both the states for improving girls literacy after 73rd Amendment Act.

PROJECT ABSTRACT: Objectives: 1)To examine CWDS' self chosen role as a Catalyst In search for new knowledge to influence dominant knowledge systems that marginalised or distorted women's contribution at various levels of social/historical transformation;2) testing the feasibility of alternative development strategies being debated in India to expand its own capacity for advocacy;and 3) to work towards a broader democratic base for the women's movement.
Methodology: Mobilisation of one village or cluster of villages level organisations and the establishment of a participatory process in which CWDS and peasant women's organisations jointly plan, execute share and monitor all programmes and activities.
Study Area: State West Bengal:-- Medinipur - Binpur Block; Bankura - Ranibandh, Khatra I II, Raipur Blocks; Purulia - Bandwan and Manbazar Blocks.

PROJECT ABSTRACT :Objectives: To explore the impact of RMK credit and its related processes on the economic and social position of women. A related objective is to develop indicators and tools to assist in the future monitoring of the qualitative impact of the RMK credit particularly on borrower women's social position, attitudinal shifts, awareness and consciousness levels and demand and use of hierarchy of crucial basic needs and services.
Methodology: The study is making use of the structured, schedules for five different categories -- Borrowers, Non-borrowers, Family Members of Borrowers, Family Members of Non-Borrowers and NGO staff. This will be supplemented by observation of selected group meetings of SHG's and observation of a few NGO staff, visits for monitoring, counselling, loan recovery, delivery etc.

PROJECT ABSTRACT :The main goal of the project is to evolve a strategy for the empowerment of women in Kuttanad, especially in the Water Management and utilization of land, water and other resources. This will be achieved through,(1)Bringing women to the mainstream of agro-economic activities suitable to Kuttanad; (2)Mobilising individual and community movements for adopting water harvesting techniques; (3)Creating and protecting community fresh water ponds for domestic water needs; (4)Mobilising women to adopt better sanitation and hygiene activities; and (5)sensitizing people of the area on gender equality and equity. With the above objectives in view 5 wards belonging to 5 local panchayaths in Kuttanad, which amply represent the peculiarities of the area, were selected for the implementation of the project.
